poker terminology 300x201 Know the Poker Terminology

If you want to start playing poker, you should first understand the basics of the game.  Poker is an exciting game that also has its own language and its own history as well as identity.  Before you play the game, you must recognize the different variations and the language used so that you will not feel lost during the game.  Having an idea about these poker terms will help you improve your game and hone your skills.  So what are the common terms in the game of poker?  Let’s discover them one by one.

Poker Game Play – The Terminologies

Here are the most common terms you would often hear when you’re playing poker:

  1. Ante- This is the forced bet of the game.  Players are usually given the exact amount of chips/money before the betting starts.  It is the prerogative of the dealer to announce the amount of the first bet.
  2. Bad Beat – Can loosely be used to describe a hand where the odds of losing were less than 20% or so. In the online poker world, this usually refers to at least having your full house beaten if not a four of a kind.
  3. Big Blind – This is the person that must place the full amount of the blind before they receive their cards. The big blind is last to act in the first round.
  4. Blind or Blind bet – This is also the forced bet that is initiated by one or more players before the game begins.  The blind somehow offers interest and excitement to every player before the game starts.
  5. Bluff – Betting at the pot in order to scare others out of the hand, specifically when you don’t have anything. Late in the hand, this is used to try to display strength in a hand when its the only way the hand can be won.
  6. Board – This is a set of cards on the table, all facing up. Playing board means that the 5 cards on the table are the best 5 cards you have.
  7. Bring In -  This means that dealer will open up a betting round.
  8. Busted – This usually refers to a high pocket pair (usually Aces or Kings) getting beaten in a semi-unlikely fashion like two lower pairs.
  9. Button – This is the seat that is the dealer for the game. The button is last to act for any round of betting, except the first round where the big blind goes last.
  10. Call -  This happens when a player matches or raises the bet of another player.
  11. Calling Station – A player who will call most bets and only raises when he has something.
  12. Catch – This refers to getting a card on the board. Usually it refers to having the top pair or similarly good hand.
  13. Chase – This is what you do when you do not have a completed hand but continue to call the pot.
  14. Check Raise – This is a bait and switch tactic that attempts to so weakness to a strong hand in order to entice a bet.
  15. Early Position – The first couple players to act in the first round of betting. It is usually a sign of strength if the early position raises.
  16. Flop – This is the first three cards that are dealt in a row after the opening round bets.
  17. Fold -  This happens when a player discards his hand and expresses his willingness to leave the game or his interest in the pot.
  18. Hole Cards – The cards that you are dealt down.
  19. Late Position – The are the two or three players immediately to the right of the dealer. They have the advantage in the poker positioning game. The late position means you already know a lot about the hand before you have to decide.
  20. Loose – This type of player plays in too many pots and chases after cards too often.
  21. Middle Position – These are usually defined as player 5 – 7 away from the dealer from the left. This position has the benefit of knowing what the first couple of players did.
  22. Muck – To throw away your hand without revealing what you had.
  23. Nut Hand – This is the strongest possible hand during the game.  This word usually applies to community card games since the player will need the community cards to complete his winning hand.  The nut hand is the strongest possible hand (combination of the community and the player’s cards).
  24. Pot – The money that is put into the center of the table during any rounds of betting. The total pot is either won by a player or split between more than one.
  25. Rags – Unplayable cards. The only time to even try is when there are few people at the table.
  26. Raise – In the opening round, this is a bet higher than the big blind. In any other round, it is a bet higher than the opening bet of that round.
  27. River – This is the last card dealt in a Texas Holdem hand. There is a round of betting and a winner is determined.
  28. Rock-  This refers to very aggressive players who continue to raise their bets with very strong hands.
  29. Semi-Bluff – A semi-bluff is a certain type of bluff where the player does not yet have a hand, but has a good percentage chance of completing a good hand. Usually inferring a straight or a flush draw.
  30. Small Blind – This is the seat that is directly to the left of the dealer. After the first round, the small blind gets to make the first bet.
  31. Split-  This term refers to the division of the pot among two or more players, instead of awarding it to only a single player.  There are several incidences where this event occurs:  during split poker games like Omaha High-Low, where one player has the best high hand and two players are tied with two of the lowest possible hands.
  32. Suited Connectors – This is what you have when your two hole cards are of the same suit and ranked consecutively, like 7 and 8 of diamonds.
  33. Tight – Describes a player who risks very little and doesn’t get involved in many hands.
  34. Turn – Also called Fourth Street. This is the 4th card to be flipped over after the flop round of betting.
  35. Under the Gun -  This refers to the position of each player.  The betting rounds start with the left side of the dealer.  Thus, the player on the left will act on the first betting round.

Play 3 Card Poker at UB

UB190x120 Play 3 Card Poker at UB

Many people think that three card poker is the only three card casino game on offer but this is not the case. There are many different casino games and card games that use three cards, some of them are ancestors of the current version of three card poker that is renowned the world over. The most famous of these is three card Brag.

UB offers one of the best online poker rooms, but also offers a full out casino with games such as 3 Card Poker. Use the UB Referral Code at UB in order to receive the special bonus.

The cards are only shuffled at the beginning of the game and unless someone shows a “prial” or three of a kind, the cards are not shuffled again. Before dealing begins, the players all agree a fixed ante before each hand is dealt. The dealer will distribute the cards clockwise.

The players all play an ante before receiving their cards and then make a follow up bet afterwords. Either a player folds to a bet made or calls the bet made by the player previous to him. For example, in a three player game, if player one bets 3 chips, player two has to either throw his cards away or bet the same amount of money. Player three will then be faced with the same dilemma as player two and will have to either fold or put more money in the pot to match what player two has placed in. But the betting doesn’t end there. The betting continues until there are only two players left in the hand. The cards that players fold are placed at the bottom of the deck.

When there are only two players left in a hand the option to “see” a hand becomes available. Again unlike in poker, “seeing” a hand doesn’t mean that both players agree to stop betting but instead means that one has agreed to double the bet of the other in order to “see” his or her cards. The person who pays to see his or her opponents’ cards doesn’t have to show their cards. If they have won they turn over and prove it thereby taking the pot. If they have lost they can simply muck their cards, allowing the other player to take the pot. This can only happen when there are two players left in the hand.

Players also have the option of playing their hand blind. This means that they do not look at their cards and as a consequence their bets are worth double that of other players. The rules for “blind” players are complex but to put it simply if you are the blind player and somehow you force all other players to fold you have not won the pot but it is simply carried forward. If you are playing blind and the other player isn’t, he or she cannot pay to “see” your hand but instead must keep betting until the “blind man” decides to “see” his opponent.

The money in the pots in Brag is huge in comparison to other games owing to the fact that there is no ability to simply “limp” or “call” until the end of the game. This makes Brag much more exciting than similar games.

Craps Tips

craps tips Craps TipsCraps is undeniably the best of all casino games in terms of fun and excitement, escorting players to handsome wins or miserable loses just at the spin of a dice. So, when playing casino craps, it is important that you comprehend the rules to set the dice rolling. This article aims to proffer some basic tips to playing craps to ensure an enjoyable crapping experience.

As a newbie to the brisk game of online craps, tricks and tips on player cards available in the casino souvenir shops pledges to take you a long way. As beginners to the craps table, these cards can help you learn the basics of playing and in case you’re skeptical about using them, trust me folks, it’s absolutely legal to seek virtual help while playing.

Initially the craps table may appear to be daunting backdrop, housing up to 20 players at a single go, although only a few players can play at a time. Running the table are 4 people – one of whom is the “stickman” – the person ramming the dice with an extended stick, and the rest of the “squad” comprises of the two dealers and a box-man. When it’s your turn to set the dice in motion, remember to gear it single handedly. Upon throwing, the dice should slap the other end of the table, and if it’s thrown off, the dice will be scrutinized before putting it back into play.

Following are some of the important tips that all craps player should follow:

a.Be a disciplined player. Be patient to learn and known how the rolls can affect the game. Be ready to leave the table if case you’re losing.

b.The time span can be small, but the amount lost can be huge – the faster to realize this, the better.

c.Know the steps to place the most apt bets.

d.Learn the tricks and tactics of avoiding bad bets and be a better craps player.

In order to play real money craps, you must know how to bet. Here is how you play the game of craps:

Pass Line Bet – There are two ways to win this bet:
1. 7 or 11 show up on the first roll
2. The point (number that the dice makes) is made (come-out roll) before a seven is rolled.

Don’t Pass Bar – The opposite of Pass Line and also can be won in two ways
1. 2, 3 or 12 appears on the come-out roll
2. Rolling a seven before the point is made.

You can’t bet on Pass or Don’t Pass after the come-out roll.

Come/Don’t Come – This is basically Pass/Don’t Pass, but can only be bet after a point is made; the next roll will be your personal point. You don’t want to roll a seven if you bet on Come, but you do if you bet on Don’t Come. You will either be able to bet on Pass or Come, but not both at the same time.

Taking the Odds – Placing an additional wager that the point will be rolled before a seven. The payouts change for the points based on how many ways there are to roll the number.

Lay Bet – This is the opposite of Taking the Odds. You are betting that a seven will be rolled before the point.

Field Bet – You are betting that the next roll will not be a 5, 6, 7 or 8 – the four most common numbers to roll.

Hardway/Any Craps/Any Seven – these are statistically the worst bets on the table. The payouts structure gives the house a significant advantage. Unless you get lucky and hit your roll once or twice, you will lose on these bets in the long run. The Any Seven bet gives the highest advantage to the house, only paying out 4 to 1 on winning bets when the odds of winning are 1 in 6.
